LOURDES WATER
In 2005, Father Raymond Zambelli, Rector of the Shrine of Lourdes, France, proclaimed the Shrine of St. Bernadette in Albuquerque an official distributor of the spring water from Lourdes. This special spring was dug by Bernadette during the ninth apparition on February 25th, 1858. Bernadette later wrote: “The Lady instructed me to go and drink from the spring. Since I could not see it, I went to drink from the River du Pau. She told me that the spring was not there. She pointed her finger toward a rock inside the grotto. I went there and found a small amount of muddy water. I put my hands into the water and dug as I was asked to do. Three times I tried to drink of the water, but it was so dirty. The fourth time, I managed to drink some. The Lady also asked me to eat of the grass which grew around the spring. She asked me to do this for sinners.”
In 2007, the Rector of our Shrine, was officially appointed an Honorary Chaplain of Lourdes during a private Mass at the Grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes, France. Often we are asked the following questions and we are happy to place the answers on this site to help others who wonder about the Waters of Lourdes.
IS LOURDES WATER THE SAME AS HOLY WATER?
Holy Water is a sacramental because it has been blessed by a priest who uses it to formally bless his congregation and for other blessings. Lourdes Water is not blessed by a priest; it was given to us by Our Lady through her obedient servant, Bernadette Soubirous.
IS YOUR LOURDES WATER DIRECTLY FROM THE SPRING AT LOURDES? AND IF I MIX IT WITH TAP WATER, IS IT STILL CONSIDERED LOURDES WATER?
Yes, the Shrine’s Lourdes water is shipped to us in large vats by the Shrine at Lourdes, France. Members of our Society of St. Bernadette then fill small bottles with the water from the barrels. Though many people choose to mix the Lourdes Water to make it go further, it would be improper to pass the water on to others as authentic “Lourdes Water” since the spring waters were blessed by Our Lady.
DOES LOURDES WATER HAVE MIRACULOUS PROPERTIES?
Though some believers would argue that Lourdes Water is, indeed, miraculous, from the beginning, Bernadette and the Church said that the waters do not cure: God cures — because of one’s faith.
