LITURGY AND MUSIC

  ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY
The Altar Rosary Society’s responsibilities include maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of the Church’s sanctuary and grotto, and keeping all of the liturgical vestments and linens clean and ironed. The Society also hosts and prepares the meal for many parish social events. It holds several fund raising events, such as bake sales or raffles, each year. The proceeds are donated to the Shrine and used for special items such as the purchase and donation of the Millennium chalice.

  ALTAR SERVERS
Altar Servers assist at the altar during the Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Select members of the Ministry of Altar Servers serve as Sunday Sacristans in preparing for Mass by setting out, cleaning and caring for, and putting away the proper vessels and other items necessary for the Mass.

  CANTORS
Cantors serve the congregation in its worship. The cantor is a singer, proclaimer of the word, liturgical minister, and spiritual leader. Cantors at the Shrine of Saint Bernadette are dedicated to leading the congregation in sung prayer and worship by using their talents during Mass, special occasions, and rehearsals. Cantors need to have experience in music and public speaking, and must be comfortable in a position of leadership. They must rehearse, and practice the weekly Psalm, Gospel Acclamation, and other songs sung during Mass to effectively encourage the participation of the congregation in the liturgy.

  CHOIRS
Parishioners have the opportunity to play a significant role in the worship of God through prayer and “song.” The Choirs contribute to and assist the congregation in accomplishing this role at the 9:00 a.m. Mass (bilingual Mass), 10:45 a.m. Mass, and the 12:30 p.m. Mass (youth Mass). The Choirs are comprised of dedicated adults and youth who faithfully come to participate with the congregation in song, through the many hymns that are familiar and well known in our Church.

  EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION
The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are adult men and women who are commissioned by the Pastor to distribute the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. They serve at Masses and some take Communion to the sick and home bound. There is always a need for more Extraordinary Ministers. If you are interested, call the Liturgy and Music Office.

  LECTORS
Lectors serve the Church through sharing faith by proclaiming the Scriptures at Mass. They are willing to study the Word of God, practice it, and to be on time when assigned. Assignments are scheduled and mailed with enough time for preparation. Those Ministers of the Word who give of themselves wholeheartedly to their ministry discover it to be a very important source of faith and prayer.

  MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY
Ministers of Hospitality warmly greet all as they arrive for Mass and other liturgical events. They are also our traffic monitors. They assist in the seating of parishioners, take the collections and assist in bringing the gifts to the altar. They insure the orderly flow of those receiving Holy Communion. At the conclusion of Mass they hand out the Church Bulletins at all exit doors. In addition to Masses, Ministers of Hospitality also assist at many other Church functions. There is a constant need for more Ministers of Hospitality.

  ADULT SACRISTANS
Adult men and women serve as sacristans during daily Mass and on Holy Days of Obligation. They set out, clean and care for, and put away the proper vessels and other items necessary for the Mass including the hosts and wine that will be needed. In addition, they are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion during the Mass. They also make all the preparations necessary for funeral Masses.
