OUTREACH & JUSTICE

  ALBUQUERQUE INTERFAITH
This is a non-partisan, non-profit group of churches, schools, and other volunteer organizations working for improvement in the availability of affordable housing, living-wage jobs, school safety and quality, public safety, and Albuquerque’s infrastructure for water supply, roads, transportation, and waste management.

  BIRTHRIGHT
Our mission is to save the lives of the unborn. We offer compassionate support, practical aid and hope to women in a non-judgmental setting so they may choose life. Birthright is an interfaith, all-volunteer, non-political, non-profit organization and totally dependent on private donations. We are a 501 (c) (3) organization so all donations to Birthright are tax deductible. We are a United Way donor option agency.

  FEATHERS
The Feathers Food Sharing Program obtains donations of non-perishable food items from parishioners and maintains a food pantry in order to the feed the hungry of our parish.

  GOOD SHEPHERD CASSEROLES
This ministry donates casseroles to the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd Homeless Ministry. A hundred casseroles, which feed approximately 1,000 to 1,200 persons, are prepared by parishioners four times a year. Faithful volunteers are always needed for this ministry.

  JESSE TREE
The Jesse Tree Ministry was established to enable local charities to provide Christmas gifts to those they support. Charities give the Jesse Tree Committee a “wish list” of needed items. Tags listing these items are then hung on two Jesse trees that stand in the vestibule of the church between the Friday after Thanksgiving to just prior to Christmas. Parishioners take the tags, purchase and wrap the items requested, and return them with the tags attached for delivery to the charities. Volunteers are needed to prepare and place the tags, retrieve and sort the returned gifts, and ensure that the gifts reach the appropriate ministries.

  PAX CHRISTI
St. Bernadette’s chapter of Pax Christi New Mexico is a local unit of the National Catholic Peace movement. Pax Christi is concerned not only with issues of peace and reduction of nuclear arms but also with issues of justice without which there can be no peace. Its agenda is three fold: prayer, study, and action.

  RESPECT LIFE
Respect Life’s mission is to help promote respect in our Church and society for all aspects of human life from conception through bodily death. This is accomplished by education, prayer, peaceful activism and service.

  SHARE
SHARE, which stands for Self Help and Resource Exchange, is a food cooperative of the Denver Archdiocese with branches in 12 states, including New Mexico. It is open to everyone and provides an opportunity to obtain frozen meats, fresh produce, and non perishable commodities at a cost a third to a half less than in grocery stores. St. Bernadette’s SHARE program, which is run entirely by volunteers, was founded in 1998. Volunteers to truck the food to St. Bernadette, take orders and issue receipts, and help organize and distribute food are always welcome.

  SOCIAL JUSTICE
In his encyclical Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict XVI teaches that Catholic social doctrine aims “to contribute, here and now, to the acknowledgment and attainment of what is just” and that “the direct duty to work for a just ordering of society… is proper to the lay faithful”. In response to this call, the St. Bernadette Social Justice Committee was formed to work for justice, particularly on behalf of the poor and powerless in our society. Among the issues addressed by the Social Justice Committee have been immigration and fair housing.

  ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) is an international Catholic organization dedicated to helping those who are suffering and in need. Our Shrine of St. Bernadette SVDP conference assists both parishioners and non-parishioners in need within our parish boundaries with the payment of utility bills, issuance of vouchers for food and for furniture, payment of rent or mortgages (in special situations) and aid to travelers. Our conference also aids other SVDP conferences (St. Therese and Sacred Heart) through a twinning program; other charities in need, such as the Good Shepherd Refuge, Barrett House, and Birthright; other SVDP conferences when disasters occur; and the main SVDP downtown facility. In addition to financial aid, our conference collects and distributes turkeys and food boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
